Tourist Attractions in and around Panaji:
Originally, Panaji was a quaint little fishing village with lots of coconut trees and a lot of greenery. If you are planning to visit Goa, Panaji is an absolute must-see. Panaji is abundant with attractions that one must visit during their stay and it has a lot to offer. Three wide roads are the main arteries in the city and theirs direction are from east to the west and ultimately merge into the Arabian Sea. Also, since the city of Panaji is netted, as if in a spider's net, with the network of waterways, river cruises are quiet an activity to enjoy.
OLD GOA: Let us start with Old Goa or Vehla Goa which is a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site and has spectacular churches and convents. Old Goa or Vehla is just 9km away from Panaji. Both Old Goa and Panaji are inter-connected by NH4A. Traveling in Goa is convenient, there are plenty of options to choose from such as the bus, taxi, auto-rickshaw, motorbike. Busses depart every fifteen minutes to Old Goa from the Panaji Kadamba bus stand( 30 minutes). Drive comfortably on NH 4A, which begins as the Ribander Causeway, runs east along the Mandovi River, through the rustic and continues south-east to Ponda. Goa Tourism arranges a guided tour of the Old Goa. There is a Goa Tourism counter at the Panaji bus stand(0832-2438520). For more tourist related information contact GTDC, Old Goa Tourist Hotel, behind Police Station, near Gandhi statue.
The entire area can easily be explored on foot because the most interesting buildings are clustered together. To the northwest is the Arch of the Viceroys, built in 1597 in commemoration of the arrival of Vasco da Gama in India, where oothe keys to the capital used to be diligently handed over to each Portuguese viceroy. An inscription left by Vasco da Gama’s great-grandson Governor Francisco da Gama, is still discernible on the arch. Nearby, the Corinthianstyled Church of St. Cajetan (1651) was built by Italian friars of the Theatine order, who modeled it after St. Peter’s in Rome. The elegant, three storeyed Convent of St. Cajetan is known for its Corinthian coloumns and pilasters of gigantic proportion. The church has a nave and two side aisles with a Baroque interior richly ornamented with gilded altars and rare paintings. Step into the nave and you can see an exquisite altar, unsurpassable in execution and design. Under this altar, you can see a crypt with a vault. Moreover, the covered well inside the alcove attests that it was once the site of a Hindu temple. The ruined gate to Yusuf Adil Shah’s palace stands here as a forgotten postcard from the pre-Portuguese era.
Southwest of St. Cajetan’s are the highlights of Old Goa: splendid Sé Cathedral , which took nearly 80 years to build and is said to be larger than any church in Portugal. The architecture of Sé Cathedral in centre of Old Goa is a unique combination of Portugal and Gothic, with Tashkent type outside and Corinthian type inside décor. One gets stunned seeing the carvings and ornamentation of the cathedral. The so-called Miraculous Cross, housed in a box in a chapel behind a decorative screen, was brought here from a Goan village after a vision of Christ was seen on it—apparently a single touch (there is a hole in the glass for just this purpose) will cure the sick. While one of the cathedral’s twin towers was struck down by lightening , the other still stands proud, housing what is supposedly one of the largest bell in Asia: Sino de Ouro. When this bell rings, its sound reaches even at a distance of 10 km.
In the same cathedral complex is the former Convent and Church of St Francis of Assisi, where the floor is marked by graves dating back as far as the 16th century. Though a bit clumsy, the metallic ornamentation, wood carvings, St Francis’s life on murals have made this institution very attractive. The building next door is Archaeological Museum displaying old coins, sculptures and portraits of viceroys now only remembered by historians.
Just across the road, opposite the Sé Cathedral , is the Basilica de Bom Jesus, the most photographed cathedral of Goa, built in granite and sand stone following Doric architecture, was built between 1594 and 1605 as a resting place for the remains of the patron saint of Goa, Francis Xavier (one of the original seven founders of the Jesuit order and responsible for most of the 16th-c. conversions), The withered body of the venerated saint lies in a silver casket to the right side of the altar. Another attraction is the sound-and-light show about Jesus and St Francis Xavier. The Basilica is open from 6 am till 6:30 pm.
Up the hill from the Basilica are, what dominates the skyline is the 46-meter high, slightly-leaning tower of the of the Church of St. Augustine; below is the Church and Convent of Santa Monica, the only monastery exclusively for the female folk in Old Goa. The Church of St. Monica beautifully portrays an impeccable blend of Tuscan-Corinthian and Composite exteriors, with an elegant Doric and Composite work on its inner frame and the chapel was adorned with murals on the rippleless ceilings and walls. Visit the large chamber in the basement, and you can have the pleasure to behold an almost endless medley of pictures of several saints. Really, it is quite unimaginable that murals of such high quality and such striking beauty could have been there in a nunnery. A short walk from this is the Royal Chapel of St Anthony. Its semi-circular chapel does not adhere to any particular style.
If you’re pushed for time, skip the walk and hop onto an auto-rickshaw or on the back of a bike. From Old Goa, it’s a short trip to view the popular Hindu temples that lie north of the town of Ponda, on National Highway 4A. Situated 9 km north of Ponda near the pristine village of priol, Shri Mangueshi Temple is one of the largest and most frequently visited temples in Goa. Sri Mangeshi Temple was built specifically as a refuge for icons of deities smuggled from the coast during the violent years of the 16th-century Inquisition. The temple is a perfect example of the mixed architectural styles partly influenced by the Christians and Muslims. The octagonal tower above the sanctum , the faced and roofs balustrade design show the Christian influence. The domed roofs show a Muslim influence. Walking distance from here (15 min. south) is the slightly less commercial Sri Mahalsa Temple, dedicated to Mohini, the female form of Lord Vishnu.
You will need a full morning for a tour of Old Goa, an afternoon for a tour of Panjim, a walker's paradise. Don’t forget to wear your walking shoes, keep your sunscreen lotion on, and carry along a bottle of water and guide map.
PANAJI:You will need a full morning for a tour of Old Goa, an afternoon for a tour of Panjim, a walker's paradise. Don’t forget to wear your walking shoes, keep your sunscreen lotion on, and carry along a bottle of water and guide map. Panaji is situated on the south bank of the Mandovi River. It is easy to get around by foot because everything is close together. The Ourem River, which runs north–south, divides Panaji. The Kadamba Bus Terminal and the Goa Tourist Office are on the eastern side of the river. Most everything else is on the west side. The Fontainhas area, the old part of the city, runs mainly along the western bank of the Ourem. The city has a definite European feel to it because of the whitewashed churches, old houses, red-tiled roofs, cobbled roads, and small squares.
All roads lead to Church Square, dominated by the towering Lady of Immaculate Conception Church at the heart of Panjim, so this is a good place to begin. Immaculate Conception Church is the main church of the Panaji town, has a majestic flight of stairs in Gothic style and and twin towers and a central gable which houses the main bell. Spend a pleasant hour at George Restaurant at the corner below the church. Turn your back to the church and face the Municipal Garden. Walk along the Ourem Creek and cross over into Panjim on the footbridge. At the other side, turn left for the heritage ward of Fontainhas. Fontainhas derives its name from the natural springs on the hillside. The main tourist attraction in Fontainhas is the Chapel of St. Sebastian. St. Sebastian Chapel is renowned for its crucifix which once hung in the Palace of Inquisition in Old Goa. The crucifix depicts Jesus Christ with his head erect and his eyes wide open. Walk up the stone flagged steps to the palace, which has 12 crosses commemorating the Stations of the Cross, tracing Christ's walk up Calvary to his crucifixion. If you visit Goa on Christmas, you must attend the open-air Christmas Mass in the courtyard of this palace (Bishop's Palace –Altinho). . Drive north on Corte de Oiteriro Road to reach the oldest surviving building Adil Shah's Palace, built by the Sultan of Bijapur. Often referred to as Idalcao in Portuguese and now it is functional as passport office of the Govt of India. A statue of Abbe Faria, is located outside the palace. The statue depicts Abbe Faria hypnotizing a woman. Now proceed to Jogger’s Park and it provides even better view of the Panaji town. From Jogger's Park a short walk down the road takes you to the Boca de Vaca Spring. The cow shaped spring, Boca de Vaca is known for its clear and sweet waters. Mahalaxmi Temple is located next to the Boca de Vaca Spring. Built in 1818, the Mahalaxmi Temple is the holy place of worship of the Hindus. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Kala Academy, located on DB Bandodkar Road, next to the Children's Park. Designed bt Charles Correa, this fine centre for art and culture, is intriguing in its of structure and space. There are also an open air theatre, a music library, a recording studio, art gallery, exhibition halls, practice rooms and several other rooms. Drive east on the riverfront road from the Kala Academy, and you can behold some of the city's most well-known sights at the Panaji Jetty. The Panaji Jetty is the place where you will find small crafts like barges, yachts and trawlers.
Panaji Museum: the spacious museum, located near Kadamba Bus Terminus, is a modern and well-maintained museum. The museum has an archive of photography, painting and sculpture brought from Goa and all over India. Panaji Museum is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5.30 pm.
Drive over the Mandovi Bridge to reach Porvorim where Xavier Institute of Research stands. The Institute has a rich collection of over 26,000 books, ancient tomes, theses, journals, and an art gallery with rare paintings of 17th century. The Xavier Institute is open from 9.30 am to 1 pm and 2-5 pm all weekdays except Sunday. A little further down the road from the Xavier Institute the road bifurcates, take left turn to reach the quiet Bardez village of Salvador do Mundo. This place is famous for the boa-shaped three-storeyed House of Goa Museum built on a teriffic island. The museum, built by architect Gerand de Cunha, has the collections of models and panels of old Goan houses and ancient household artefacts.
DONA PAOLA: For a change from the church and temple atmosphere, one can go to Dona Paola. The pristine beach of Dona Paula is situated at a distance of 7 km from Panaji. Buses operate at 5 minutes interval from Panaj main bus stand. The beach divides the Zuari and Mandovi estuaries and provides spectacular views of Mormugao town. Enjoy a round of water-scooter ride on the ebullient waves of Dona Paula as a starter. After relaxing for a while, go for some out-of-the-world marine experiences - water-skiing, toboggan ski-biscuit, skibob, sports fishing. You can go for fishing at the jetty. This is an ideal spot to see the sunset on the Arabian Sea water front. On way to Dona Paula, a kilometer short of it, the confluence of sea and Mandovi river is the Miramar Beach. This is Panaji's own beach and a perfect recreational area for vacationers. It is a quite beach, just ideal for morning and evening walks. Swimming is quite safe, except at the mouth of Mandovi. Lifeguard facilities are also available at this spot.
Goa River Cruises: Goa River Cruises on the Mandovi River is an enjoyable experience. There are two types of cruises -- from the Panaji jetty, down the Mandovi into the Zuari bay and up the Mandovi to Aldona and a mineral water spring. Select from the number of options available such as daytime, sunset or moonlit river cruises, to make your tour to Goa a memorable one. While your sail across the river Mandovi you can view some exotic lush greenery and the blue waters of the river. You can also spot some flocks of seagulls, crocodiles and the locals. Your trip to Panaji is incomplete without a ride on Goa Tourism's boat, Santa Monica. The cruise like Santa Monica which runs in the evening over the River Mandovi provides live music band and folk dance to visitors for entertainment.
